What factors limit south Asian womxn in America from "resisting the patriarchy?" (I am referring to both brahmanical patriarchy + white supremacy.) To begin to answer this, we must address the circumstances of womxn in domestic violence. So often, people assume womxn don't leave abusive relationships because they have accepted their reality. Or, people assume they don't have enough bravery or education to escape. But in reality, many have assessed their situation and found no clear way out. We must reframe it from a personal failing to a societal failing. This is important to understand right now in 2020, if we want to organize the south Asian community towards solidarity. I believe we have enough womxn aligned with leftist politics, but due to patriarchy, can not publicly or safely act on it. I am reading from A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles of South Asian Women in America. This chapter is written by Satya P. Krishnan and Malahat Baig-Amin. This book has been edited by Shamita Das Dasgupta. I also want to credit Manavi @manavispeaks , Sakhi @sakhinyc and Apna Ghar @apnagharinc for their organizing work in this space. |
